Sun safety

Regardless of skin colour or complexion, we are all exposed to the same harmful UV rays on a regular basis. UVA rays account for 95 percent of UV radiation reaching the earth’s surface. These rays penetrate deep into the skin, and play a major role in skin aging, wrinkling and contributing to the development of skin cancer. When these UVA rays penetrate the skin, free radicals are released causing DNA changes that can result in skin cancers.

UVB, the main cause of skin reddening and sunburn, damages the skin’s superficial epidermal layer. UVB rays can burn your skin all year round, especially at high altitudes and reflective surfaces, such as water, sand and concrete, where these rays bounce back at 80 percent, and in so doing, hit your skin twice. UVC rays are the most destructive, but these rays are stopped by the Ozone layer.

Regular use of sunscreen can prevent aging, and reduce skin damage.

How to apply sunscreen

Apply Xeroderm sunscreen generously before going outdoors. It takes 15 minutes for sunscreen to be absorbed by your skin and for it to protect you. Rub thoroughly into skin and remember to apply to all bare areas as well, such as neck, face, ears and feet.

Sunscreen should be re-applied at least every two hours for your skin to remain protected. It should be applied immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.

Depending on the SPF value, sunscreen gives various levels of protection.

  • SPF 0 0%
  • SPF 2 50%
